I’ve almost never read a book that points out its main conflict in the title. Pride and Prejudice does just that, it’s about a love between a prideful man and a woman who has prejudice towards him. Aside from teaching the lesson that a book shouldn’t be judged by its cover, the book also presents me with a great concept of love. I like this book because of its portrayal of love as well as the theme of prejudice.
First, I like the portrayal of love in this story. The story is set in a society in which men and women are more likely to marry for wealth than for love. However, the heroine, Elizabeth, will not be married to a man that she does not love. While this seems like a normal concept in today's society, it was rare when the book was written. By choosing love over money, Elizabeth’s character gives me the opportunity to consider what is most important in a marriage. Through reading Elizabeth's dialogue with other characters, I came to the conclusion that while financial stability is important, a woman will not live happily if she doesn't love her husband, especially in a time when devorce was nearly impossible.
Another concept that this book taught me was the harms of prejudice. Elizabeth tried to judge Darcy, her future husband, just because he was not interacting with others when she met him. Her prejudice almost prevented a happy marriage. From this, I learned that prejudice is dangerous because it may make a person lose opportunities that he or she could have gotten. As easy as it is to judge a person by their first impression, it’s best to get to know someone before making an assumption about them.
Pride and Prejudice is interesting for me because of its theme of love and prejudice. (unfortunately, I didn’t really get the pride part because Darcy didn’t seem prideful to me) I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about love in the 1800s. However, anyone could read this book for entertainment or to learn of the disadvantages of having prejudice.
