Reading can be as interesting as watching a soap opera, but it can also be as boring as watching paint dry. I have personally read a lot of books, and I have experienced both feelings mentioned above. Through my experiences, I concluded that the best way to make reading enjoyable is to annotate the book and also to expect to enjoy oneself.
I like to view reading as a conversation between me and the book. By annotating, I get to share my thoughts with the book. Through my annotations, not only do I ask questions about parts of the story that interest me, but I also get to challenge the authors line of thought and share my own thinking. This encourages me to think more as well as feel more involved in the reading process. On the other hand, reading without annotating is like listening to a one sided conversation. I often feel bored and even frustrated to have to endure some author ranting on about his or her ideologies for a few hundred pages. For the big difference in my reading attitude, I have observed that annotating makes reading much more enjoyable for me.
In addition to annotating, I feel like the most important thing to do while reading is to believe that it is enjoyable. I know that when many of my classmates are assigned a book to read as homework, they think of reading as a chore and thus they do not enjoy it. However, from my own experience, I’ve learned that it is far easier to enjoy reading if one believes that the book is enjoyable. If one expects to enjoy the book, one is far more likely to catch small amusing scenes as well as foreshadowing in the story. These aspects will make reading far more interesting.
By both annotating and expecting to enjoy the book, one can greatly enhance one’s reading experience. Annotating the book encourages engagement to the book while expecting to enjoy the book makes the book itself much more amusing. Thus, the most important thing to do while reading is to be an active reader and to sit back and enjoy.
