The coming of age genre is common in many novels that teenagers like to read. For example, The Perks of being a Wallflower, Little Women, Sense and Sensibility, these books all belong to the coming of age genre. The coming of age genre comes with the theme of losing innocence, they are usually about a child growing up and learning about the complicated adult world. The best thing about a coming of age genre is that it is easily relatable. The things that happen to the characters often happen to the readers as well. Teenage is the time when people learn about the adult world. The adult world is much more complicated than childhood, and thus some people may get depressed or confused. That is where the coming of age genre comes in. This genre is helpful because it basically says that “yes the adult world is complicated, but look! There is still hope!”
The important thing to do when picking a coming of age book is that the book had better fit the culture that the reader comes from. Cultures are very diverse, and thus different children from different cultures will face different problems when they are in their teenage years. Thus, a coming of age genre is best if it can be relatable to the reader. So, I would advise that when looking for a coming of age book, readers search in their mother language, and find an author who is from the same country or culture as them. This will help readers to find the most interesting coming of age book for them.
It should be noted, however, that even if the coming of age book is not rooted in the reader’s culture, the reader can still typically learn alot from it. Some lessons are imbued through all cultures. For example, love, loss, hurt, sadness, friendship: these emotions and relationships are part of the basic human and they are relevant through all cultures. Thus, the reader can still relate to characters that are going through problems related to the emotions and relationships above. Thus, a coming of age book is can still be relevant outside of it’s culture.
